What is Reconciliation?

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is an encounter with God’s mercy. Christ calls us to conversion, “Repent and believe in the Gospel” (Mk 1:15)—and invites us to return to the Father (cf. Lk 15:18).

This sacrament is also known as:

  • Conversion, because it calls us to return to God.

  • Penance, because it involves repentance and a change of life.

  • Confession, because we acknowledge our sins.

  • Forgiveness, because God grants us His grace and peace.

  • Reconciliation, because it restores our relationship with God and with the Church (cf. 2 Cor 5:20).

By receiving it, we experience God’s merciful love and are strengthened to live in a state of grace and to be reconciled with others (cf. Mt 5:24).
