BECOME CATHOLIC
The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA)
What is OCIA?
The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA) is the process by which adults prepare to enter fully into the Catholic Church through formation, prayer, and participation in liturgical life.
Who is it for?
OCIA is for:
- Unbaptized adults who wish to become Catholic
- Adults baptized in another Christian denomination who wish to join the Catholic Church
- Baptized adult Catholics who need to receive First Communion and/or Confirmation
What does the process involve?
It is a journey of faith that includes:
- Formation in the Gospel and the teachings of the Church
- A life of prayer and spiritual accompaniment
- Participation in the parish community
- Celebration of the sacraments
Participants are accompanied in a process of conversion and growth in their relationship with Christ.
Stages of OCIA
1. Evangelization and Pre-Catechumenate
An initial time of seeking and asking questions about faith. The person begins to draw closer to Christ and the Church.
2. Catechumenate
A stage of deeper formation in faith, accompanied by prayer and reflection. It can last as long as necessary, depending on each person's spiritual growth.
3. Purification and Enlightenment
This takes place during Lent. It is a time of intense preparation to receive the sacraments, marked by prayer and conversion.
4. Sacraments of Initiation
Celebrated at the Easter Vigil, where catechumens receive:
- Baptism
- Confirmation
- Eucharist
5. Mystagogy
The period following initiation (until Pentecost), focused on deepening faith and living as an active member of the Church.
